Networking
Due to increasing complexity and interdisciplinarity, innovations are increasingly emerging in networks. This is why Photonics BW actively promotes the development of innovation-promoting structures through networking and brings together researchers, manufacturers and users in the field of optical and quantum technologies across all sectors. Benefit from our comprehensive range of services and the established photonics network.
Consulting
We are happy to advise you on topics relating to the Baden-Württemberg photonics sector and optical and quantum technologies.
Would you like to found a start-up or are you looking for cooperation partners? Would you like to expand your expertise in the field of optical and quantum technologies?
We know the right partner for you.
Technology Transfer
Technology transfer includes platforms for personal exchange, further qualification, knowledge transfer and personal mediation through network management. The most important instrument for technology transfer are the specialist and interdisciplinary expert groups in which experts from industry, SMEs, science and academia meet regularly.
Innovation Support
Structures that promote innovation are created in particular through systematic networking. This is why Photonics BW has set itself the task of networking developers, manufacturers and users along the value chain and across industries. Through our own projects and collaboration in European projects, we are consistently developing our expertise and services to make it easier for our members to establish or expand a culture of innovation and to support them in the efficient generation and utilization of ideas.
Working Groups
Experts from industry and science meet regularly to exchange experiences and discuss current topics.

Promotion of Young Talent
Photonics BW supports and organizes activities and events to promote young talent in the field of optical technologies. Events such as “Girls Days” and “Jugend forscht” as collaborations between schools and companies or research institutions are of particular importance. We are also happy to advise interested young scientists and entrepreneurs on educational and career paths in photonics.
Through the cooperation of Photonics BW with its partner networks from OptecNet Deutschland and numerous European partners, we would like to emphasize the importance of photonics and light-based technologies to young people and the public.
Further Training
Photonics BW offers four advanced training seminars for targeted further training in the field of applied optics:
- Optical Systems: Design and Simulation (Seminar language: German)
- Advanced Lens Design (English)
- Illumination optics (German)
- Optical characterization of displays (German)
Optische Systeme: Design und Simulation (German)
Focus: Applied imaging optics, in particular the design and calculation of optical systems.
Knowledge transfer: Theoretical content is deepened through many practical exercises and concrete case studies using the optical design software OpticStudio.
Target group: Engineers, physicists and technicians who want to improve their competence in the field of optics.
Knowledge: Special OpticStudio knowledge is not necessary, basic knowledge of technical optics is helpful.
The next seminar will take place from March 26 - 29, 2025 in Blaubeuren.

Advanced Lens Design (English)
Main topic: Lens Design
Concept: Combination of theoretical knowledge about optical design for imaging systems with the transfer into practical solutions. Intensive coaching and assistance by the lecturing team.
Target Group: Engineers, physicists, technicians, project manager and scientists
Required Knowledge: Fundamental knowledge and first practical experience in optical design and the application of the software OpticStudio.
The next seminar takes place in Aalen from October 15 - 18, 2025.

Beleuchtungsoptik: Entwicklung und Anwendung (German)
Focus: Lighting Optics
Concept: Deepening the basics of lighting technology and optics. Introduction to the design of lighting optical systems using current examples and by competent speakers. Practical laboratory and PC exercises to deepen what you have learned in the “Lighting Technology” and “Optical Design” laboratories.
Target group: Engineers, physicists and technicians who would like to gain further qualifications in the field of lighting optics.
Knowledge: Basic knowledge of optics and lighting technology is required, but no expert knowledge.
The next seminar will take place in autumn 2025.

Studies
With the Photonics BW study guide, we would like to offer young people who are looking for the right technical or scientific course of study an orientation aid, both in the choice of course and educational institution. The general section provides a characterization of the respective university or university of applied sciences. In the subject-specific section, the degree courses and lectures are described in detail.
Apprenticeship
In cooperation with the Aalen employment office, Photonics BW has compiled a list of apprenticeships in optical technologies. The compilation provides an overview of job profiles in the fields of optics, electronics, metal as well as optical communication, measurement technology and image processing and is intended to help young people choose their vocational training. The brochure also includes a list of contact addresses where further information can be obtained.
Women in Photonics
Photonics BW has its own networking offer for women in photonics: the “Women in Photonics” network. In addition to current specialist topics in photonics, the focus is on the personal exchange of experiences and the promotion of young STEM talent for the photonics industry. Through regular network meetings, women should be actively involved in our network and become visible as encouraging role models for interested women and girls. New participants are very welcome!
