An OpTecBB delegation recently traveled to Barcelona, Spain to engage with leading companies and research institutions in the fields of photonics and quantum technologies. The visit, co-organized with SECPhO (with the support of Sergio Sáez and Eli Torralba), provided a unique opportunity to gain insights into the technical expertise and strategic vision of the vibrant Catalonian innovation ecosystem.
The program included visits to prominent companies such as Sensofar (microscopy solutions), Monocrom (laser technologies), ShinePhi (optical characterization), and Quside (quantum technologies). In addition, the delegation met with internationally renowned research centers including the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), CD6 – Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, and Eurecat, Catalonia’s leading multidisciplinary research hub.
Discussions highlighted the strong industry connections and rapidly growing projects across Catalonia, particularly in quantum technologies – spanning quantum communications, sensing, and computing. The delegation gained valuable perspectives on how these institutions are shaping the future of photonics and quantum applications, with clear opportunities for international collaboration.
The delegation was joined by Teresa Puerta (ACCIO), who emphasized the importance of fostering cross-border partnerships to accelerate innovation and industry impact.
This successful visit underscores the dynamic role of Spain as a European hub for photonics and quantum technologies, and opens doors for further cooperation between OpTecBB members and key players in the region. Spain is this year’s guest country of the Photonics Days Berlin (8-9 October 2025).
