Tasks and Objectives of Photonics BW e.V.

Photonics BW e.V. was founded in July 2000 as a non-profit organization with the aim of promoting optical technologies in Baden-Wuerttemberg. From 2001 to 2009, Photonics BW evolved into the competence network for optical technologies in Baden-Wuerttemberg, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Today, Photonics BW has 90 members from industry, SME, start-ups, research, as well as banking and consulting institutions.

Objectives:

  • Establishment of innovation-promoting structures through systematic networking
  • Promotion of optical technologies and quantum technologies in research, development and application, training and education, marketing and public relations
  • Promotion of dialog between industry, science, government and society
  • Improvement of international competitiveness
  • Sustainable strengthening of Baden-Wuerttemberg as a leading location for photonics and quantum technologies

In the context of an European evaluation process, Photonics BW has been awarded with the Bronze Label of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative in 2011. After a strict and comprehensive audit with 24 quality indicators, the network received the quality label Cluster Excellence Baden-Württemberg in 2012 and 2015 and the EU quality label Cluster Management Excellence in Gold in 2013, 2016 and 2018.


Photonics BW is a member of OptecNet Deutschland e.V., the nationwide umbrella association of the eight innovation networks for optical technologies in Germany.

With over 500 members from economy, science, education, consulting and finance, OptecNet Deutschland unites strong partners for the promotion of the key technology photonics.


Photonics BW is member of "go-cluster", the cluster political excellence activity of The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy and supports cluster management organisations with the development of their innovation cluster. Clusters included into the „go-cluster” programme are vanguards of innovation and demonstrate how highly competent Germany is in different industries and technological sectors. Currently 84 members make use of the various offers of the programme.
